Four Great Soundtracks to the Movies We Love

WORD UP! NEWS

Nothing goes better with a great movie than a banging soundtrack. Seriously, do they even think about soundtracks anymore? I know I’m not the only one who goes to a movie and gets excited about the music. I’m just in the theater singing all off-key. Don’t lie you know you do it too. That one song hits and you just go in. Oh, the nostalgia. Well today, you’re in for a treat because I’ve rounded up some of my favorite movie soundtracks. They will have you revisiting these classic movies and the scenes that resonate with them. So enjoy ladies and gentlemen, here are my top soundtrack picks.

Love Jones

This is one of those soundtracks that you can listen to all the way through. Starting with the infamous Darius Lovehall spoken-word piece, “Brother to the Night” the smooth melodies continue track for track leaving you wanting to watch this film over and over again. Some of the most notable songs on this soundtrack are The Sweetest Thing by Lauryn Hill, In A Sentimental Mood by John Coltrane, and Duke Ellington, Hopeless by Dionne Farris, and my personal favorite Sumthin’ Sumthin’ (Mellosmoothe) by Maxwell. C’mon that falsetto! It will for sure have someone wanting to be the blues in you left thigh tryna become the funk in your right.

Above the Rim

Give me all the classics right here! This soundtrack is iconic and for good reason. It topped the R&B Albums chart where it stayed for ten nonconsecutive weeks. It features tracks such as Anything by SWV, Afro Puffs by Lady of Rage (you know you were rough and tough wit cho afro puffs hey), Regulate by Nate Dogg and Warren G. (R.I.P Nate Dogg), and Part Time Lover by H-town. “If you don’t mind, I’ll do you just fine, I can be your part time loverrrrr.” Dino with the vocals! What! Best song on the soundtrack. And yes, I am absolutely being biased because that’s the hometown. R.I.P Dino.

Soul Food

I gotta dive right into this one. Dru Mutha Effin Hill!! Where do I even start? We’re Not Making Love No More is hands down the best song of their career! Yea I said it. Pull up! They killed every part of this song and if you don’t get in your feelings after hearing it, there must be something wrong. Who can forget Boyz II Men’s A Song for Mama? I’m pretty sure that song will forever be the Mother’s Day anthem. Other songs included on the soundtrack are What About Us by Total Feat. Missy Elliott and Timbaland, Slow Jam by Usher and Monica (y’all already know how I feel about Usher), and I Care ‘Bout You by Milestone. This soundtrack is full of bangers, but that Dru Hill track is the best one.

Boomerang

This joint right here! They just don’t make good soundtracks anymore. Keith Washington’s Tonight is Right! Why yes, tonight is right and I am ready! The saxophones are simply seductive and Washington’s smooth vibrato will get anyone ready for a great night ahead. Toni Braxton! I’m gonna say it louder for the people in the back Ms. Toni Braxton! Who can forget that iconic scene where Angela says to Marcus, “What could you possibly know about love You know, I’m sick and tired of men using love as if it’s some disease you just catch. Love should have brought your ass home last night.” Then Boom! Toni Braxton’s hit song Love Shoulda Brought You Home begins to play. Perfect timing, perfect transition, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again no one can sell pain like Toni Braxton. Next up, is There U Go by Johnny Gill. Let me just say this: Johnny can sing this song a capella and it will hit exactly the same! He is delivering vocals on vocals and frankly, I’ve just lost my train of thought because they are just that mesmerizing. I too have lost my self-control Mr. Gill and I don’t even care to find it. There are more amazing tracks on here, but these three take the cake for me.
