The Wood (1999) – Movie Review

WORD UP! NEWS

We all know what it’s like when we link with our friends, nonstop laughs, jokes, and trips down memory lane. That’s exactly what Mike (Omar Epps), Roland (Taye Diggs), and Slim (Richard T. Jones) encounter when they meet up for Roland’s wedding. We get to see how the then duo of Ro and Slim became a trio when Mike moved to Inglewood, CA from Winston – Salem, NC.

If I’m being honest, I don’t know how they became friends after the first day. If I were Mike, they wouldn’t have been able to tell me NOTHING to get me to be cool with them after they got me slapped AND beat up. To be fair Mike deserved everything he got, like why would you touch Alicia’s (Melinda Williams) butt? You don’t know her (or anyone for that matter) and you take a bet like that?

At any rate the move progresses and we get to see flashbacks of their childhood and the dynamics of the friends as adults. One thing we didn’t (or maybe we did) expect was for Ro to completely go missing the morning of his wedding. He was always the ladies’ man in the group so for him to be the first one of the group to be getting married was a little surprising.

The dynamic of going back and forth between past and present worked well and kept the story interesting. I also love that we were able to follow the progression of the friendship over the years while also focusing on the relationship between Mike and Alicia. If you weren’t rooting for them to be together then you are a hater.

As we go along the journey of trying to Roland to the altar, we are also left to wonder what happened between Mike and Alicia. Until it all comes to a head at the reception when she walks in, and they share a dance. It’s like they have always been together, picking up right where they left off.

Overall, I would say that this is a movie that I enjoyed and still enjoy today. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it at least once. The storyline is simple and easy to follow although they do a bit of flipping back and forth between past and present.

Maybe I’ll get with my friends so we can take our own trip down memory lane.
