Movie Review • “A&K all the way!” Antoine & Kenny were every coaches dream, two siblings on the same team that could ball their butts off. Antoine & Kenny had been balling together since they were kids so them making the roster on the same college team had to be a dream come true.
When the brothers made it to the University of Washington everything was smooth sailing until the tragic game against UCLA when Antoine scores a dunk & has a heart attack while hanging on the rim. As a child that loved basketball, that scene messed me up a little bit. Anytime I would see someone dunk, that scene always popped into my head. Antoine was taken to the hospital & unfortunately didn’t make it, & when the coach came to let the team know I knew the team dynamic would change. That scene with Kenny breaking down in the locker room is the first time I’ve ever gotten emotional with a character played by Marlon Wayans. For Marlon to only be known for his comedy he showed his range of acting with that scene alone.
The team begins to fall apart without Antoine until weird things start happening in a game that surprisingly gives the team their first win without him. That’s when Antoine reveals himself as a ghost in the locker room to Kenny who pops up because Kenny called for him. One thing black people don’t play about are ghost & Kenny lost it in that locker room until his brother was able to calm him down & explain everything. Once Kenny got used to Antoine being around he eventually had to let the team in on what’s really going on. Of course they thought he was losing his mind until Antoine uses his supernatural forces to persuade them.Â
Now that the team is in the loop on why all the crazy shots & passes are happening during the game they don’t have a problem with it, as long as they are winning. All that changes once Antoine goes overboard & injures a key player on the opposite team. After that line was crossed the team came to a mutual agreement that they no longer wanted Antoine helping them which upsets him & causes tension between him & Kenny. This caused Kenny to realize that Antoine has been running his life since they were kids, & he couldn’t escape it even in death. Now that they’ve made it to the finals with the help of Antoine the team is doubting themselves & having a horrible first half until Kenny gives them a passionate halftime pep talk which caused them to play like a brand new team & win the game without the help of Antoine.
The Sixth Man is a 90’s movie that many don’t mention. It isn’t one that you can put against the greats but it has it’s own comedy lane. Although it was a comedy it did have the serious moment of self evaluation for both characters. Overall, it was a fun movie to watch with Marlon having his funny moments.
