Album Review • One thing about Keith Sweat, he knew great singers when he heard them. Discovering Silk & Kut Klose were 2 of the greatest things outside of his own music he contributed to the 90’s. Kut Klose has always been an underrated group that the industry didn’t appreciate. They gave us hits & vocals that will last for decades.Â
Their debut album & unfortunately only album “Surrender” gave us some of the hottest bedroom hits. With vocals from Athena Cage, Tabitha Duncan, & Lavonn Battle, Kut Klose had a sound that was very distinctive. It was very soulful but so sensual that it will have you raising your hands like a personal praise while Athena sings “boooooyy I know that this is it!” Sis took us straight intro praise & worship on that verse when she shouldn’t have, not with those lyrics! Soon as the beat drop on “Get Up On It” fingers MUST snap. Personally that song should be considered a 90’s classic because it’s such A VIBE!! Every time I hear it I automatically hit my 90’s kick stomp.Â
Although “I Like” is their biggest hit & rightfully so, “Surrender” & “Get Up On It” are in my opinion the MVP’s of the album. Those two cuts feel like the 90’s when they come on. When I say “feel like the 90’s” you know exactly what I mean. It’s a feeling that you sometimes can’t explain but you know it feels good. Athena’s vocals on “Surrender” make my toes curl in the most nonsexual way. Her voice feels like that moment you hit that spot in your ear with a q-tip! It hit all the right spots at the right time!Â
A B-Side that’s a cute vibe is “Do Me.” It’s a different sound production wise for them but it’s one of those that will make you spin the block. It reminds me of Subway “This Lil Game We Play” with the vocal arrangements. Although we only got 1 album from these amazing vocalist, they left a mark with the hits they did give us & we are forever grateful for them. Before I go, PUT SOME RESPEK ON ATHENA CAGE THROAK!! Sis was & still is SANGIN!Â
This is a perfect review! I completely agree with everything you said.
